He is set to appear as a new character in a reboot of US comedy Frasier, where he will join the show’s original star Kelsey Grammer as his old college friend-turned-university professor Alan Cornwall.

The actor, 62, is making his return to the small screen for the reboot of popular comedy series just years after the death of his son Archie in 2020 following a brain haemorrhage.

But Nicholas is already a household name thanks to his illustrious TV career and is best known for playing Rodney Trotter in the legendary sitcom, Only Fools and Horses.

Nicholas, most famous for playing the younger half brother of Del Boy in the iconic BBC comedy, is now set to play the mischievous and boozy university professor Alan Cornwall in Frasier’s sequel.

The star looked completely different from his iconic former character in pictures released before the series premiere.

His performance in Only Fools and Horses captured the nation’s hearts and even led to three BAFTA nominations. The show, which ran from 1981 until 2003, was even voted Britain’s Best Sitcom by TV viewers in a 2004 poll.

Meanwhile Frasier launched in 1993 and went on to win dozens of awards during its 11-year run.

Grammer returns as the titular character in the reboot, who has returned to Boston from Seattle, and has “new challenges to face, new relationships to forge and an old dream or two to finally fulfil”.

He recently spoke of working with Nicholas to The Sunday Times. He said: “Nicholas Lyndhurst is co-lead in it. Nick and I fell in love when we were doing Man of La Mancha together.

” I warned them in America. I said, ‘Wait until this guy gets here. You’ll be doing a scene with him and suddenly you realise he’s just run off with it.’

“He’s an extraordinary actor, a dear friend. And I am so pleased.”

Streaming network Paramount+ announced on Tuesday that the new show will launch in October.

This is Nicholas’ first role since his family faced a devastating tragedy in September 2020 when his son Archie died aged 19 after suffering an intracerebral haemorrhage which was caused by a rare condition called acute lymphoblastic lymphoma.

The CBBC actor, who had previously briefly starred alongside his dad in a sitcom, was discovered at his family home in Fulham, West London.

Nicholas said of himself and Archie’s mum after his death: “Lucy and I are utterly grief stricken.”
