‘Furious’ John Wayne had to be restrained by six guards during Marlon Brando’s Oscar win

JOHN WAYNE had to be held down by a six-man strong security team at the Academy Awards. The furious Western star wanted to rush on stage during Marlon Brando's Best Actor Oscar win for The Godfather. The staunch conservative and patriot was horrified by Brando's behaviour.

On March 27, 1973, The Godfather would go on to win three of its 10 Academy Award nominations, but not without controversial happenings. When James Bond star Roger Moore announced Marlon Brando as the winner of the Best Actor Oscar, the Don Corleone star wasn’t there to accept the award. Instead, a 26-year-old Native American actress and activist took to the stage in traditional dress, but what happened next shocked the room – and the world.
