Pantoliano’s ‘M*A*S*H’ Cutting Portrayal

In this “Identity Crisis” show, his Mullen character gets counsel from Father Mulcahy. Mullen swapped dog tags with a dead colleague, and guilt eats at the soldier over the act.

The Monster M*A*S*H fan page goes into some key details about the episode.

Joe Pantoliano’s character comes to the unit as a soldier named Levin. He got the wrong blood infusion at Battalion Aid because he’s wearing a different dog tag. During the episode, Mullen’s story unravels over religious identification.

Mullen calls for the priest and confesses his act in the middle of one night. When wounded and in battle, the man pretends to be dead as a group of North Koreans catches up with their victims. One is his friend, Josh Levin. Pantoliano’s Mullen character comes up with a plan to leave the country by taking his friend’s uniform and transfer orders.

The priest is shocked and discourages him from the plan, but Mullen won’t change his mind. Mulcahy refuses Mullen’s request for forgiveness, saying, “How can I, when you’re virtually unrepentant?”

The priest comes up with a plan to thwart Mullen, giving him Levin’s mail and other items. When Mullen sees it, he aborts the plan and gets back on a truck, heading back to a war zone.

The episode was the first of two that David Ogden Stiers, known as Charles Winchester, directed. He also guided the “That Darn Kid” episode in 1982. Dirk Blocker, son of the legendary “Bonanza” actor Dan Blocker, also stars.
